How do you know if a mutual fund is overvalued?
Unlike a stock, there is no such thing as 'fair value' for a mutual fund. So, there's no question of a mutual fund being overpriced or underpriced. An equity fund is a basket of stocks. You can take each stock in its portfolio, work out its fair value and see if it is overpriced or underpriced.
- Analyse Fund Performance vs Benchmark Performance.
- Check the Expense Ratio of Funds.
- Study Fund History.
- Check the Strength of the Portfolio.
- Check Portfolio Turnover Ratio (PTR)
- Compare The Maturity Period of Funds.
- Compare Risk-Adjusted Returns.
High expense ratios are just one of the red flags Benz points out. Other fees can eat into performance as well, including sales charges that some companies tack on when you buy or sell a fund. High manager turnover is another cause for concern. But ultimately, a fund's track record speaks for itself.
Under normal circ*mstances, the market capitalization is almost equal to the GDP. If this ratio falls below 0.7 or so, it could mean that the market is undervalued and could provide a buying opportunity. On the other hand, if this ratio crosses above 1.25, the market is said to be overvalued.
Price-earnings ratio (P/E)
A high P/E ratio could mean the stocks are overvalued. Therefore, it could be useful to compare competitor companies' P/E ratios to find out if the stocks you're looking to trade are overvalued. P/E ratio is calculated by dividing the market value per share by the earnings per share (EPS).
Common technical indicators that can help evaluate a mutual fund as a good or bad investment include trendlines, moving averages, the relative strength index (RSI), support and resistance levels, and chart formations.
However, if you have noticed significantly poor performance over the last two or more years, it may be time to cut your losses and move on. To help your decision, compare the fund's performance to a suitable benchmark or to similar funds. Exceptionally poor comparative performance should be a signal to sell the fund.
Risk level | Colour |
---|---|
Moderately low | Light green |
Moderate | Yellow |
Moderately high | Orange |
High | Red |
"Red" can denote a negative balance on a company's financial statement or an individual's bank account. It can also signify unfruitful investments, as well as unfavorable regulations governing businesses.
Redemption fees are fees charged by mutual funds and other funds when you sell your shares. The SEC limits redemption fees to 2%.
What PE ratio is overvalued?
A high P/E ratio for a fast-growing company may make a lot of sense, so it's important to understand the growth outlook before making a judgment solely based on the P/E ratio. A PEG ratio above 2 is typically considered expensive, while a ratio below 1 may indicate a good deal.
Based on the latest S&P 500 monthly data, the market is overvalued somewhere in the range of 84% to 142%, depending on the indicator, up from last month's 79% to 140%.
The consensus among private investors is that US equities, specifically the S&P 500 index, are overvalued. But the earnings-based measures used to judge their valuation can be flawed. Other measures suggest that US equities are trading around fair value and that shorting US large-cap companies might not be advisable.
Evaluate the ETF's Premium or Discount
If the ETF is trading at a premium, it could indicate that the ETF is overvalued. If it's trading at a discount, it could indicate that the ETF is undervalued.
Unlike an ETF's or a mutual fund's net asset value (NAV)—which is only calculated at the end of each trading day—an ETF's market price can be expected to change throughout the day. (A mutual fund doesn't have a market price because it isn't repriced throughout the day.)
Fair Value Estimate for Apple
With its 2-star rating, we believe Apple's stock is overvalued compared with our long-term fair value estimate. Our fair value estimate is $150 per share. Our estimate implies a fiscal 2023 (ending September 2023) price/earnings ratio of 25 times.
What Is the Average Mutual Fund Return Over the Last 20 Years? High-performing large-company stock mutual funds have produced returns of up to 12.86% in the last 20 years. Comparatively, the S&P 500 has produced returns of 8.13% since 2002.

SSAQX | State Street US Core Equity Fund | 16.20% |

One of the strategies for compounding money through mutual funds is to use the 8-4-3 rule, where the compounding effect grows exponentially. In the initial 8 years, the compounding effect shows good results, but its speed increases in the next 4 years and super-exponentially in the following 3 years.
When should you pull out of mutual funds?
Market Volatility and Risk Management
Assess how the fund fares compared to its category peers and relevant benchmark indices to determine if it consistently lags. If a fund consistently underperforms over multiple periods and fails to deliver satisfactory returns, consider exiting the investment.
Mutual funds have sales charges, and that can take a big bite out of your return in the short run. To mitigate the impact of these charges, an investment horizon of at least five years is ideal.

Among low-risk mutual funds, debt funds invest in money market instruments and government bonds, lowering the associated risk. Various categories exist within debt funds, including liquid funds, dynamic bond funds, gilt funds, and ultra-short-term funds.
The Russell 3000 Growth Index is a good market index benchmark for investors when considering aggressive growth funds. Aggressive growth funds offer some of the highest return potential in the equity markets, also with some of the highest risks.
