How stressful is private equity?
While the travel will be less, the work in private equity is very stressful and demanding, so the hours you actually spend working may be more stressful or mentally demanding.
In private equity, you'll also be responsible for a lot of different tasks. The deal teams are lean and your decisions will have a high degree of permanence, which is why I'd say the stress level is overall higher in private equity than in banking. Very importantly, there's also no one around to check your work.
Private equity professionals work long hours and are highly competitive and must think critically, and have a passion for financial investing deals, not just following the markets. Other requirements to start a career in private equity are: Excellent grades and a notable transcript in school.
Also, private equity investments may involve the company using a significant amount of debt, which can be costly to service through interest payments over time. Overall, the risk profile of private equity investment is higher than that of other asset classes, but the returns have the potential to be notably higher.
Private equity firms are usually smaller and more selective about their employees. But once a hire is made, they care less about how performance is maintained. There are exceptions and overlaps in every industry but, in general, the average day is a bit less stressful for private equity associates.
With this power, however, comes greater accountability, as they're more deeply involved as company shareholders. This can lead to greater stress in private equity than in consulting firms.
You usually get into the office around 9am and may leave between 7pm-9pm depending on what you're working on. You may work some weekends (or part of a weekend) depending on if you are on an active deal, but on average, weekends are your own personal time.
Private Equity Career Training
PE firms are small, tight-knit, and full of extremely smart and highly motivated people.
For a student looking to break into one of the top 10 PE firms, your chance is 1 in 300 or 0.33%. To break into one of the top 10 hedge fund firms, your chance is 1 in 147 or 0.68%.
Why Is Private Equity So Hard to Get Into? Finding a job in private equity is hard because PE jobs are very competitive, and there are, comparatively, not that many private equity jobs available.
How much does a VP in private equity make?
Annual Salary | Hourly Wage | |
---|---|---|
Top Earners | $241,298 | $116 |
75th Percentile | $187,500 | $90 |
Average | $143,004 | $69 |
25th Percentile | $113,500 | $55 |
For the vast majority of first-year private equity associates, the base salary is around $135k to $155k. Then, based on fund performance, bonuses tend to range from 100% to 150% of the base salary.
Private Equity Associate Lifestyle and Hours
At many smaller funds and middle-market funds, you can expect to work 60-70 hours per week, mostly on weekdays, with occasional weekend work when deals heat up.
Analysts at all types of private equity firms earn significantly less than Associates, just as Analysts in IB earn significantly less than Associates. In fact, PE Analysts often earn less than IB Analysts! So, you might initially make less money if you start in private equity.
Compared to other jobs in the financial space, private equity roles can provide a more balanced lifestyle, potential for better pay and more engaging, connected work. Private equity is growing in popularity, and an increasing number of college graduates or financial professionals are looking to break into the space.
Investment banking is all about providing capital to companies who need it. Private equity, on the other hand, is about buying companies and then growing them. So, if you're interested in finance and deal-making, investment banking is the way to go.
Those who wish to broaden their horizons or simply desire a change of pace will often migrate to similar sectors such as hedge funds or portfolio management. Additional exit options include: Being hired as a chief analyst by another firm.
Private Equity Managing Director Salary + Bonus: Compensation here is highly variable, but a reasonable range is $700K to $2 million, with slightly less than half from the base salary. “Senior Partners” will earn more if the firm makes the distinction.
Private-equity firms typically run leaner operations than banks and so have less need to cut jobs during slowdowns. But some have laid off about 5% to 15% of their staff, said Sasha Jensen, founder and chief executive of Jensen Partners, an executive-search firm for alternative-asset managers.
State | Annual Salary | Monthly Pay |
---|---|---|
California | $89,038 | $7,419 |
Maryland | $88,832 | $7,402 |
Tennessee | $88,240 | $7,353 |
Utah | $87,969 | $7,330 |
Is private equity ruthless?
It's no secret that private equity firms have a bad reputation. They're often seen as ruthless vultures that swoop in to buy up struggling companies, slash costs, and then sell them off for a profit.
Another major downside is that private equity is a much more saturated market today than in previous decades. There's too much capital chasing too few high-quality companies, which means that returns will almost certainly decrease in the future.
The Key Persons are the individuals who the investors believe are critical to sourcing, making, managing and exiting from investments to maximize the investor's return. A lender providing a subscription facility to a fund is also concerned with that fund's management.
80% of your returns will usually come from 20% of your investments. 20% of your investors will usually represent 80% of the capital. For portfolio companies. 20% of your customers will usually represent 80% of your profits.
The 2 and 20 is a hedge fund compensation structure consisting of a management fee and a performance fee. 2% represents a management fee which is applied to the total assets under management. A 20% performance fee is charged on the profits that the hedge fund generates, beyond a specified minimum threshold.
